Job Description
The role involves working as a Ubuntu distribution engineer within the Canonical Public Cloud team to optimize and maintain Ubuntu Server for cloud environments, collaborating with global partners and open source communities to ensure high-quality, seamless cloud-based solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate within a distributed team to develop and maintain Ubuntu for cloud environments
- Optimize cloud-specific agents, webservers, databases, and virtualization stacks for public clouds
- Maintain and improve continuous deployment operations for delivering Ubuntu images
- Evaluate contributions from other engineers to ensure high-quality software standards
- Work with upstream projects, community teams, and customers to troubleshoot and resolve issues
- Package and maintain software such as cloud agents and server workloads
- Debug open source and team-maintained code to resolve technical issues
Requirements
- Experience working closely with the Ubuntu Engineering organization to ensure technologies such as cloud specific agents, webservers, databases, and virtualization and containerization stacks are optimized for public clouds.
- Ability to collaborate proactively within a distributed team and evaluate contributions of other engineers to maintain high-quality software standards.
- Experience working with upstream projects, the Ubuntu and Debian communities, and commercially supported customers.
- Proficiency in debugging issues on open source code and team maintained code.
- Experience working with the Ubuntu Engineering Server team to maintain and package software such as Cloud agents (e.g., google guest agent, ec2-hibinit-agent, walinuxagent).
- Experience working with traditional server workloads including web servers, databases, and network services.
- Ability to work from home with willingness to travel 2 to 4 weeks for internal and external events.
- Interest or experience in public cloud operations or architecture.
- Interest or experience in open source maintenance or contribution.
- Understanding of basic reproducibility and testing steps, and ability to set up test systems in containers or virtual machines.
- Strong fundamentals in Python programming language.
- Interest in learning Linux distribution packaging.
- Fundamental understanding of package management and dependency resolution.
- Interest in containerization and virtualization technologies such as Docker, OCI service containers, LXD system containers, Virtualbox, QEMU, or public clouds.
