Job Description

A software engineer role focused on maintaining and developing Ubuntu Server packages, collaborating within a distributed team to improve open source server workloads, virtualization, and containerization technologies, while contributing to the future evolution of Ubuntu.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed team to develop and maintain Ubuntu Server packages.
  • Evaluate contributions from other engineers to ensure high-quality software standards.
  • Contribute to shaping the future of Ubuntu through new ideas and advising on ongoing work.
  • Debug issues in open source and team-maintained code.
  • Maintain and package software related to web servers, databases, network services, virtualization, and containers.
  • Work with upstream projects, other teams, and customers to support and improve Ubuntu Server.

Requirements

  • Interest or experience in open source maintenance or contribution
  • A Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field, or any higher degree
  • Understanding of basic reproducibility and testing steps, and comfort in setting up test systems in containers or virtual machines
  • Ability to describe issues and steps clearly
  • Strong fundamentals in at least one programming language from C, C++, Python, Rust, or Go
  • Interest in learning distro packaging
  • Fundamental understanding of package management and dependency resolution
  • Interest in containerization and virtualization such as Docker or OCI service containers, LXD system containers, and local virtualization like Virtualbox or QEMU, or Public Clouds
  • Ability to collaborate proactively within a distributed team
  • Ability to evaluate contributions of other engineers to maintain high-quality software standards
  • Ability to debug issues on open source code and team maintained code
  • Ability to work with the team to maintain Ubuntu Server packages, specifically but not limited to traditional server workloads such as web servers, databases, network services, virtualization, containers, package management, dependencies, language runtimes, and toolchains
