Job Description
A Software Engineer on the Core Desktop team at Canonical is responsible for designing and developing the next generation of immutable Ubuntu desktops, focusing on security, reliability, and usability, using Linux container technologies and various programming languages in a remote, global environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop components of the Core Desktop for Ubuntu.
- Work with Linux container technologies such as kernel namespaces, cgroups, AppArmor, and seccomp.
- Write high-quality, efficient, and secure code for a large user base.
- Collaborate with team members to understand and improve immutable desktop environments.
- Participate in code reviews to ensure quality standards and architecture integrity.
- Engage with the Ubuntu community to gather user feedback and insights.
- Contribute to documentation to support team learning and knowledge sharing.
- Troubleshoot and resolve user-reported issues through debugging and problem-solving.
Requirements
- An undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path.
- An understanding of software development methodologies and life cycles.
- Skills in Linux containerisation technologies such as kernel namespaces, cgroups, AppArmor, or seccomp.
- Skills in Linux desktop environments including XDG portals, FreeDesktop specifications, systemd, GRUB, etc.
- Proficiency in programming languages including C, C++, Python, and Shell scripting.
- Good communication skills for both internal and external interactions.
- Willingness to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks long.
