Job Description

A Software Engineer position focused on developing and enhancing the Ubuntu Core Desktop environment, involving work with Linux container technologies, system languages, and contributing to a secure, reliable, and user-friendly immutable Linux desktop platform in a remote, global team setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop components of the Core Desktop for Ubuntu.
  • Work with Linux container technologies such as kernel namespaces, cgroups, AppArmor, and seccomp.
  • Write high-quality, performant, and defensive code for a large user base.
  • Collaborate with team members to understand and implement immutable desktop features.
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure quality standards and architecture consistency.
  • Engage with the Ubuntu community to gather user feedback and insights.
  • Contribute to documentation to support team learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve user-reported issues through debugging and problem-solving.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path.
  • An understanding of software development methodologies and life cycles.
  • Skills in Linux containerisation technologies such as kernel namespaces, cgroups, apparmour, or seccomp.
  • Skills in Linux desktop environments including XDG portals, free desktop specifications, systemd, GRUB, etc.
  • Proficiency in programming languages including C, C++, Python, and Shell scripting.
  • Good communication skills for both internal and external interactions.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks long.
