Job Description
A Software Engineer in Sustaining Engineering at Canonical is responsible for troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based open source infrastructure such as Ubuntu, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, working across various layers of the software stack to support enterprise customers and community development.
Key Responsibilities
- Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, OpenStack, or Kubernetes and other open source software
- Maintain close collaboration with Canonical's support, field, and product engineering teams
- Participate in upstream open source communities to develop fixes and backport patches
- Review code produced by other engineers
- Troubleshoot and address issues across all layers of the Linux-based software stack
- Drive upstream fixes and contribute to the open source projects
- Prioritize and manage work effectively to meet project goals
- Contribute to process, tools, and documentation improvements through team discussions
Requirements
- Professional experience as a software engineer
- Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar field
- Strong experience with Linux, OpenStack, Kubernetes or other cloud technologies
- Strong development-level experience with Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux
- Ability to troubleshoot with gdb and other tools
- Familiarity with git source code repositories and branches
- An exceptional academic track record from both high school and preferably university
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
