Job Description
A Software Engineer in Sustaining Engineering responsible for troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based open source infrastructure such as Ubuntu, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, supporting enterprise customers and contributing to open source communities in a remote, globally distributed environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, OpenStack, or Kubernetes and other open source software
- Maintain close collaboration with Canonical's field, support, and product engineering teams
- Participate in upstream open source communities to develop fixes and backport patches
- Review code produced by other engineers
- Troubleshoot and address issues at various levels of the software stack, including upstream fixes
- Drive issues to resolution through workarounds, guidance, and upstream or Ubuntu releases
Requirements
- Professional experience as a software engineer
- Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar field
- Strong experience with Linux, OpenStack, Kubernetes or other cloud technologies
- Strong development-level experience with Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux
- Ability to troubleshoot with gdb and other debugging tools
- Familiarity with git source code repositories and branches
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
- Demonstrated ability to resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, OpenStack, or Kubernetes and other open source software
- Experience maintaining a close working relationship with field, support, and product engineering teams
- Experience participating in upstream communities
- Experience developing fixes, backporting patches, and working with upstream for inclusion
- Experience reviewing code produced by other engineers
- Ability to demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
- Ability to prioritize work and manage time effectively against those priorities
- Ability to participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
- Ability to maintain clear, technical, and concise communications
- Ability to work productively from home and travel internationally up to 10% of work time
