Job Description
A Senior Site Reliability GitOps Engineer at Canonical is responsible for driving automation and infrastructure as code initiatives to support and maintain Canonical's core IT services, working with open source technologies, cloud infrastructure, and distributed systems to ensure reliable and scalable operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support and maintain Canonical's IT production services.
- Drive automation and GitOps development within the team as an embedded tech lead.
- Design and architect services to be offered as products to the organization.
- Develop infrastructure as code practices to increase automation and improve processes.
- Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds.
- Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot, perform capacity planning, and conduct performance investigations.
- Set up and maintain observability tools for monitoring and alerting.
- Collaborate with global engineering, operations, and support teams.
- Lead and contribute to larger projects and automation initiatives.
- Share best practices, mentor team members, and participate in design sessions.
- Manage time-critical escalations effectively.
Requirements
- Proven experience of IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and a passion for technology.
- Experience in developing automation and GitOps practices within a team as an embedded technical lead.
- Ability to closely collaborate with the IS architect to align solutions with the IS architecture vision.
- Experience in designing and architecting services that can be offered as products to the organization.
- Extensive experience applying infrastructure as code to develop and improve automation processes.
- Ability to automate software operations for re-usability and consistency across private and public clouds, considering the complexities of distributed systems.
- Operational responsibility for all of Canonical’s core services, networks, and infrastructure.
- Skills in troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance investigation.
- Experience in setting up, maintaining, and using observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch, including designing, implementing, and maintaining monitoring and alerting systems.
- Ability to work with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support teams.
- Experience in Python software development, including large projects.
- Experience working with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems.
- Proven experience managing and deploying cloud infrastructure using code.
- Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
- Hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
- Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in computer science or a related engineering field.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English via email, chat, video, voice calls, and in person.
- Motivated and capable of troubleshooting from kernel level to web applications, with a willingness to seek assistance when needed.
- Flexibility and quick learner, able to adapt to fast-changing environments.
- Willingness to work within distributed teams.
- Passion for open-source software, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
