Job Description

An Engineering Manager role responsible for leading and developing a team of engineers working on core components of Ubuntu Linux, including system startup, toolchains, networking, and storage, at the intersection of open source and enterprise technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a distributed engineering team focused on Ubuntu core components
  • Demonstrate active and hands-on engineering leadership to ensure sound technical practices
  • Plan, estimate, and execute engineering projects and deliverables
  • Collaborate with product management to define vision and strategy for Ubuntu
  • Drive adoption of modern software development practices within the team
  • Design and promote strong engineering and organizational practices
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps

Requirements

  • Extensive experience working with Linux distributions and packaging technologies such as deb, rpm, or other packaging systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers.
  • High-quality software engineering knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Linux system architecture, boot process, Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go toolchains, ARM, or RISC-V.
  • Engagement with open source communities and processes.
  • Ability to lead, challenge, and develop strong engineers, positively influence team culture, facilitate technical delivery, and drive strategy and execution.
  • Proven experience in planning, estimation, and execution of engineering projects.
  • Deep understanding of Linux and Ubuntu operating systems.
  • Experience with managing distributed engineering teams.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional leadership teams and work with product management to define vision and strategy.
  • Experience designing, embracing, and evangelizing engineering and organizational best practices.
  • Ability to grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Experience working with or understanding of software development practices and tools relevant to Linux system components such as startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration and management.
