Job Description
This position involves working as a software engineer on the Linux kernel team at Canonical, focusing on developing, testing, and maintaining Ubuntu's Linux kernels across various hardware platforms and use cases, with an emphasis on security, performance, and stability in a remote, globally distributed environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a globally distributed team to develop and improve Linux kernels for Ubuntu across various hardware and platforms
- Diagnose and resolve kernel issues in collaboration with silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturers
- Take responsibility for specific Ubuntu Linux kernel flavors, including testing and deployment
- Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing
- Submit, review, and apply kernel patches to enhance kernel functionality and security
Requirements
- Significant programming experience in C.
- Solid background with git.
- Broad knowledge of the Linux kernel and kernel subsystems.
- Demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging.
- Understanding of Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycle.
- Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and other low level system engineering.
- Professional written and spoken English.
- Experience with Linux Debian or Ubuntu preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
- Passion, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each.
