Job Description

This role involves developing and maintaining the Linux kernel for Ubuntu across various platforms, collaborating with a global team, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to open-source kernel projects, with a focus on security, hardware support, and performance optimization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a distributed team to develop and maintain the Linux kernel for Ubuntu across various platforms and architectures
  • Learn from senior mentors to understand the inner workings of the Linux kernel
  • Work with external hardware and silicon manufacturers on bleeding-edge platforms
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers, community, and testing
  • Ensure the delivery of different Ubuntu Linux kernel flavors
  • Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches in collaboration with upstream maintainers

Requirements

  • Recent university graduates or early career professionals who are enthusiastic to develop kernel-level software in multiple areas including security updates, patching, and testing.
  • A background in software engineering.
  • Motivated to work in a distributed team.
  • Willing and able to travel globally twice a year for company engineering events.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
  • Programming experience in C and/or Rust.
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git.
  • Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Ability to thrive in a remote work environment and be well-organized and motivated as a self-starter.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve issues in the kernel reported by customers, the community, and discovered by testing.
  • Ability to collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team.
  • Work closely with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturer delivery teams on bleeding-edge platforms.
  • Take personal responsibility for the delivery of various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tooling and automation for delivery and testing of Ubuntu Linux kernels.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches, working with both internal and external upstream maintainers.
