Job Description
Canonical is seeking a technical engineering manager to lead the development of secure, embedded Linux systems for IoT and other fields, overseeing a distributed team of engineers and driving innovation in open source software, Linux, and containerization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and build a distributed engineering team through hiring, coaching, mentoring, and career development
- Design and implement Ubuntu Core system software across various CPU architectures such as ARM, RISC-V, and x86
- Prioritize requests, plan the development roadmap, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality software
- Collaborate with stakeholders, manage expectations, and communicate effectively with other teams and management
- Promote and implement modern, agile software development practices and foster a healthy engineering culture
- Contribute technically to the team’s goals by directly participating in software development
- Participate in leadership activities and collaborate with other organizational leaders
Requirements
- Demonstrated competencies in embedded software development
- Strong skills in Golang, C and Shell
- A solid understanding of Linux and a modern GNU Linux distribution, Debian or Ubuntu preferred
- Experience leading and building a distributed team of engineers through hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback and career development
- Experience in coaching and mentoring team members with hands-on career development
- Ability to effectively set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
- Experience advocating and advancing modern, agile software development practices and helping develop and evangelize engineering and organizational practices
- Ability to contribute to a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values
- Active participation in the leadership team and collaboration with other organizational leaders
- Solid experience working in an agile development environment
- Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
- Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about an alternative chosen path
- Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
