Job Description

An Engineering Manager at Canonical leads and mentors a distributed team working on the Launchpad platform, driving technical excellence and strategic development to support open-source projects like Ubuntu, while fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment in a remote, global setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a high-performing, distributed engineering team in the EMEA region.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop engineers to achieve their full potential and foster a culture of continuous learning.
  • Shape the technical direction of Launchpad and ensure successful execution of development initiatives.
  • Apply engineering principles to solve complex technical challenges and contribute to team goals.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders across teams and external partners to drive alignment and shared success.
  • Drive the ongoing development and improvement of Launchpad infrastructure and features.
  • Advocate for modern, agile software development practices and promote organizational excellence.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative work environment aligned with company values.
  • Collaborate with leadership to define and influence the strategic direction of engineering efforts.
  • Ensure seamless feature delivery and robust production services at scale for distributed teams.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to inspire, mentor, and develop engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth with an outstanding track record of doing so.
  • Deep technical expertise and passion to fuel innovation, enabling the team to solve complex challenges with confidence.
  • Experience leading teams to build and ship high-quality software, pushing the boundaries of scalability and reliability.
  • Experience designing and evolving distributed systems that power mission-critical applications and future-proof infrastructure.
  • Capable of articulating ideas effectively, ensuring alignment across teams and stakeholders with clear, persuasive communication.
  • Track record of driving agile methodologies, fostering adaptability, collaboration, and efficiency in a fast-moving environment.
  • Location within the EMEA region, as this is a remote role based in that region.
  • Ability to work remotely and engage with global teams, including up to 6 weeks per year of international travel for key events.
