Job Description
The Engineering Director at Canonical leads and manages hardware enablement quality assurance and testing teams, driving strategy and implementation to ensure high-quality, reliable Linux hardware certification across multiple architectures and devices, including PC, server, and IoT hardware.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage software engineering teams focused on hardware enablement, quality assurance, and testing.
- Develop and implement quality processes for hardware certification and continuous testing across various CPU architectures.
- Oversee automated and manual testing of Ubuntu software on hardware platforms, including triage and bug tracking.
- Collaborate with development teams to improve testing efficiency and effectiveness.
- Establish and maintain engineering processes to ensure high-quality deliverables and team productivity.
- Hire, develop, and mentor engineering managers and staff engineers to grow team capabilities.
- Coordinate with OEM partners and stakeholders to align hardware certification and quality standards.
- Drive strategy for hardware enablement, testing, and certification, including energy consumption measurement and sustainability goals.
- Represent the team and product to internal and external stakeholders, including partners and customers.
- Participate in leadership activities, contributing to the overall engineering and organizational culture.
Requirements
- A strong technical background with an outstanding Linux-based software engineering track record, preferably with low-level embedded experience.
- An undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about an alternative chosen path.
- Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation.
- A proven track record of going above-and-beyond expectations to achieve outstanding results.
- Leadership experience and a track record of developing and growing people.
- Management experience with the confidence to set high expectations and ensure teams deliver timely, high-quality results.
- Passion for technology evidenced by personal projects and initiatives.
- The work ethic and confidence to shine alongside motivated colleagues.
- Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
- Experience with Linux Debian or Ubuntu preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year, for company events up to two weeks long.
