A Community Engineer at Canonical is responsible for fostering and supporting open source community initiatives, facilitating collaboration between community members and Canonical teams, and promoting community engagement through technical and organizational efforts, primarily within the Ubuntu ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate and facilitate community initiatives and processes
Support and engage with volunteer developers and community members
Create and share content to promote community projects and events
Represent the community and Canonical at conferences and public speaking engagements
Collaborate with internal teams to align community efforts with company goals
Support the creation and growth of technical projects within the community
Manage and nurture community contributions to Ubuntu and open source projects
Requirements
Experience with developer tools and open source projects, with a clear public record of accomplishments such as talks, blog posts, GitHub contributions, or activity on platforms like X.
Interest and experience with Ubuntu Linux, including kernel or userspace, DevOps, software development, testing and QA, package management, or container technology.
Ability to work autonomously and assume full ownership of objectives as needed.
Flexibility with working hours and enjoyment of working with new technology in a fast-paced environment.
Experience working with open source communities and understanding the workflow of volunteer contributors.
Experience in technical program management with excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with developers and software engineers and represent the Ubuntu community and Canonical as a contributor to the wider Linux ecosystem.
Willingness to work remotely with the potential to travel 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events, with the possibility of additional travel if desired.
