Job Description

A Community Engineer at Canonical is responsible for fostering and supporting open source community initiatives, facilitating collaboration between community members and Canonical teams, and promoting engagement through technical content and events, all while helping to scale and sustain a thriving Ubuntu community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate community initiatives and processes
  • Support community members with technical skills and organizational guidance
  • Engage with the community through content creation, social media, and events
  • Represent the community and Canonical at conferences and public speaking engagements
  • Collaborate with internal teams to align community plans with company objectives
  • Encourage and support the creation of new open source projects and tools
  • Manage and nurture volunteer developer contributions
  • Communicate community updates and achievements through various channels

Requirements

  • Experience with developer tools and open source projects
  • A clear public record of accomplishments such as talks, blog posts, GitHub contributions, or activity on platforms like X (Twitter)
  • Interest and experience with Ubuntu Linux, including kernel or userspace, DevOps, software development, testing and QA, package management, or container technology
  • Ability to work autonomously and assume full ownership of objectives as needed
  • Flexibility with working hours and enjoyment of working with new technology in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with open source communities and understanding the workflow of volunteer contributors
  • Experience in technical program management with excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to travel 2 to 4 weeks for internal and external events, with potential for additional travel
  • Ability to communicate effectively with developers and software engineers and represent the Ubuntu community and Canonical in the wider Linux ecosystem
  • Passion for technology and working with brilliant people
  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulation, and accountability
  • Self-motivation and a thoughtful, enterprising attitude
  • Ability to nurture community contributions to Ubuntu and support community initiatives through content and technical support
  • Experience with contributing to open source projects (preferred but not mandatory)
  • Experience with community management or developer advocacy (preferred but not mandatory)
  • Experience as a software developer (preferred but not mandatory)
