Job Description

A Community Engineer at Canonical is responsible for supporting and scaling open source community initiatives, engaging with volunteers and developers, facilitating collaboration, and representing the Ubuntu community through content creation and event participation, all within a remote, globally distributed team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate community initiatives and processes
  • Support and engage with volunteer developers and community members
  • Create and share content to promote community activities and achievements
  • Represent the community and Canonical at conferences and events
  • Collaborate with internal teams to integrate community plans and support community contributions

Requirements

  • Experience with developer tools and open source projects.
  • A clear public record of accomplishments such as talks, blog posts, GitHub contributions, or activity on platforms like X.
  • Interest and experience with Ubuntu Linux, including kernel or userspace, DevOps, software development, testing and QA, package management, or container technology.
  • Ability to work autonomously and assume full ownership of objectives as needed.
  • Flexibility with working hours and enjoyment of working with new technology in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with open source communities and understanding the workflow of volunteer contributors.
  • Experience in technical program management with excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel 2 to 4 weeks for internal and external events, with potential for additional travel if desired.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with developers and software engineers and represent Ubuntu community and Canonical in the wider Linux ecosystem.
