Job Description
The Aurora CDL A Operator is responsible for operating autonomous and manual commercial vehicles during development missions, collecting data, performing vehicle inspections, troubleshooting, and ensuring safety protocols, all while supporting the advancement of self-driving technology through hands-on testing and collaboration with engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous and manual commercial vehicles on public roads and closed courses to support AV development missions.
- Perform high-fidelity mapping and data collection to enhance map coverage and domain expansion.
- Conduct on-road validation and testing of software releases, identifying and reporting defects and anomalies.
- Prepare and maintain the vehicle through inspections, sensor calibration, software updates, and troubleshooting.
- Collect, log, and annotate mission data, providing detailed feedback on vehicle performance and environment interactions.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, DOT FMCSA regulations, and legal requirements during vehicle operation.
- Act as the primary communication link between on-road operations and engineering teams to relay development needs and feedback.
Requirements
- Possession of an Interstate Class-A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a valid U.S. Driver's License, with the ability to pass DOT physical and meet all DOT qualification standards.
- Must pass pre-employment, post-incident, and randomized drug testing in accordance with FMCSA requirements.
- Driving record must pass Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) guidelines.
- Be at least 25 years of age.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience driving trucks commercially.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for basic troubleshooting and maintenance of vehicle systems.
- Proficiency in collaboration tools, including Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets.
- Experience with Jira, including filling out tickets and tracking ticket statuses.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and team collaboration.
- Inquisitive attitude, interested in problem solving and solving puzzles.
- Work experience in a collaborative environment, demonstrating being a team player.
- Ability to prioritize and make strategic decisions proactively.
- Experience in operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) in diverse traffic and weather conditions, including long-distance driving and deployments.
- Willingness and ability to travel weekly to new collection locations up to 90% of the time, including air travel for deployments.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including overtime and weekends as needed.
- Ability to pass all DOT and company-required testing, including pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, ongoing random testing, and annual medical certification.
- Physical ability to sit for long periods while operating a vehicle and lift up to 50 pounds for equipment handling and cargo securing.
- Ability to operate the Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and execute mission protocols in a wide range of weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and diverse road environments (urban, rural, interstate highways, construction zones).
- Comfortable with exposure to dust, dirt, vibration, and other particulate matter common to commercial vehicle operations.
- Flexibility to work non-standard hours, including over-the-road schedules, weekends, or nights, to meet critical development deadlines.
