Job Description

The Staff Systems and Safety Engineer at Aurora is responsible for ensuring the dependability and safety of cloud-based infrastructure supporting autonomous freight operations, including developing use cases, performing safety analyses, and collaborating across teams to optimize fleet safety and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop use cases and concepts of operation (ConOps) for cloud-based services and user-facing applications managing autonomous freight.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into technical specifications.
  • Define and allocate system requirements across interfaces, ensuring traceability to implementation.
  • Perform safety analyses such as HARA, P FMEA, and STPA to ensure dependability of cloud-to-truck integrations.
  • Design and execute verification and validation plans for scalable cloud services supporting fleet operations.
  • Partner with safety and operations teams to ensure safe and effective use of tooling by dispatchers, remote specialists, and first responders.
  • Analyze field events and cloud service interruptions to identify design improvements and prevent systemic failures.

Requirements

  • Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field
  • Five or more years experience in systems engineering, safety engineering, or a related field
  • Experience writing verifiable functional and non-functional requirements, preferably in autonomous systems, dependable distributed systems, or system-of-systems contexts
  • Strong foundation in verification and validation methods for safety-critical or mission-critical systems where human-machine interaction is a core component
  • Proven ability to work in high-ambiguity environments with evolving priorities, while managing diverse stakeholders across software, product, and operations teams
  • Experience performing safety analyses such as HARA, P FMEA, STPA to ensure dependability of cloud-to-truck integrations supporting real-time fleet operations and autonomy feedback loops
  • Ability to define and execute comprehensive Verification Validation (V V) plans for scalable cloud services, ensuring end-to-end performance across machine-automated systems and human-in-the-loop operations
  • Experience developing use cases and concepts of operation (ConOps) that support safety analysis, requirements development, and feature function definition for cloud-based services and user-facing applications managing autonomous freight
  • Ability to collaborate closely with Product, Operations, Cloud Infrastructure, and Autonomy teams to translate product requirements into technical specifications
  • Experience owning the definition and allocation of requirements across system interfaces, with appropriate decomposition and traceability to implementation at the service level

Base salary range of $189,000 - $274,000 per year
