Job Description

The Staff Mechanical Design Engineer will lead the development and integration of mechanical systems for Aurora's autonomous vehicle hardware, focusing on creating robust, manufacturable, and safety-critical electronic control units and compute modules. The role involves mechanical architecture design, prototyping, validation, and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to support the deployment of self-driving technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and architecture of ECU systems, including enclosures, thermal management, structural design, and packaging
  • Own full lifecycle development from concept through production, including prototyping, validation, and manufacturing transition
  • Define system-level requirements and translate them into detailed mechanical designs and specifications
  • Design for high-performance compute systems with thermal solutions, EMI/EMC shielding, and durability considerations
  • Prototype, validate, and iterate ECU hardware designs through rapid prototyping and testing
  • Partner with manufacturing to optimize designs for DFM, DFA, and production support
  • Collaborate with electrical, firmware, software, and vehicle teams to drive system-level tradeoffs and technical decisions
  • Provide technical leadership, conduct design reviews, and mentor junior engineers

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) or Master's degree (MS) in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of industry experience in Mechanical Design.
  • Proficient in CAD design and 2D drawing creation using GD&T, with Catia 3DX preferred.
  • Prior experience working with Contractor Manufacturers in high volume settings, including Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), build support, and Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes.
  • Experience designing for harsh environments including shock, vibration, and temperature cycling with long-term durability considerations.
  • Experience mitigating EMI/EMC through specifications for connector selection, board-level shielding, and wiring harnesses.
  • Ability to apply a deep understanding of structural and thermal engineering principles to assess designs and validate simulation outcomes.
  • Proficiency in generating 2D tolerance analysis, including the application of Root Sum Squares (RSS) and Monte Carlo methods when appropriate.
  • Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes common to electromechanical products.
  • Experience identifying critical failure modes and developing reaction plans to mitigate failures.
  • Experience troubleshooting and conducting root-cause analysis of product and fleet issues.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary environments involving mechanical, electrical, and software teams.
  • Strong presentation and documentation skills for participating in critical design decisions.
  • Willingness to travel within the US 1-2 times a year and internationally 1-2 times a year.
