Job Description
The Staff Data Scientist will lead data analysis and modeling efforts to evaluate and improve the safety performance of Aurora's autonomous vehicle technology, collaborating with engineering teams and providing technical expertise to support safety cases and risk assessments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop metrics, models, and statistical analyses to assess and improve the safety performance of the Aurora Driver.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of on-road and simulated data to identify safety events and risks.
- Develop probabilistic models to evaluate product safety and support risk-based decision-making.
- Partner with engineering teams to develop and maintain Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) and contribute to verification and validation work products.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior data scientists and analysts.
- Champion data science best practices, including code reviews, data governance, and scalable workflows.
- Present technical findings and data-driven recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of industry experience as a Data Scientist, Analyst, or similar technical role.
- Demonstrable expertise in coding, programming concepts, and technical tools, with a strong emphasis on being an expert at using Python.
- Advanced knowledge and experience using relational databases such as SQL, PostgreSQL, and knowledge of best practices for Data Engineering.
- Strong understanding of both common and advanced Data Science modeling tools and technologies, e.g., numpy, sklearn, pytorch.
- Experience driving Data Science analysis end-to-end, working closely with Engineering and Product teams to productionize pipelines and surface insights scalably.
- Experience developing and maintaining Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) and contributing to verification and validation (V&V) work products.
- Proven ability to communicate technical, data-driven analysis to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including translating executive input into work.
- Experience in a safety-critical industry such as autonomous vehicles, aerospace, robotics, or medical devices, with a strong understanding of safety engineering principles and risk assessment methodologies.
- Familiarity with functional safety standards and regulations, e.g., ISO 26262, UL 4600.
- Experience working with data transformation tools such as DBT.
- Experience working on ETL pipelines and leveraging big data engines.
- Experience using Amazon Web Services (AWS) tools.
- Possession of an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Statistics, Computer Science, Operations Research, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
