Job Description
The Senior Incident Commander at Aurora is responsible for leading and managing the response to complex, high-severity incidents across autonomous vehicle systems, enterprise IT, and cybersecurity, ensuring swift resolution and continuous improvement of incident response capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the tactical response to complex, high-severity incidents across software, hardware, IT, and cybersecurity domains.
- Establish command and control during critical events, making real-time decisions to resolve incidents efficiently.
- Manage stakeholder escalations and ensure targeted stakeholder engagement throughout the incident lifecycle.
- Conduct incident retrospectives to identify root causes and define actionable follow-ups for continuous improvement.
- Develop cross-functional partnerships to understand stakeholder concerns and support real-time incident response.
- Communicate incident status and analysis to executive leadership and provide strategic insights.
- Maintain operational readiness by participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation and supporting incident response efforts.
Requirements
- Five years of direct experience in a command-oriented role such as incident management, crisis response, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Network Operations Center (NOC) or Security Operations Center (SOC) leadership, or military first-responder operations, having served as an Incident Commander or lead responder for high-stakes technical events.
- A strong, holistic understanding of the interconnectedness of complex systems, including on-vehicle compute, enterprise IT infrastructure, cloud services, Network Operations (NOC), and Security Operations (SOC), with the ability to facilitate and drive technical conversations to successful outcomes.
- Understanding of the principles of monitoring and observability in complex, distributed systems.
- Demonstrated capability to remain calm and decisive under pressure, efficiently coordinating response efforts and making sound judgments in rapidly evolving, high-stakes situations.
- Experience briefing senior executives and leadership in real-time on complex, fast-moving incidents, articulating technical details, impact, and proposed resolutions clearly and concisely.
- Exceptional attention to detail with a track record of meticulously documenting incident timelines, contributing factors, and post-incident analysis to drive accurate reporting and continuous improvement.
- Willingness and ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, demonstrating flexibility to cover shifts as part of a global incident response capability.
