Job Description
A Transmission Line Engineer responsible for designing and analyzing overhead and underground transmission lines, supporting project development from feasibility to construction, and coordinating with various engineering and environmental teams in a consulting environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Own transmission line engineering deliverables from feasibility through IFC, including route selection, design criteria, calculations, and construction packages.
- Model and analyze overhead lines using PLS-CADD and related tools for clearances, sag tension, loading, and foundation reactions.
- Engineer underground transmission route layouts, duct bank designs, cable ampacity, sheath bonding, grounding, and splicing plans.
- Apply standards such as NESC and ASCE to prepare sealed criteria, specifications, and calculation packages.
- Coordinate interfaces with substations, civil and structural components, environmental permitting, and ROW considerations.
- Support construction activities through RFIs, shop drawing reviews, outage planning, energization, site walks, and as-builts.
Requirements
- 6 to 10 years of transmission line engineering experience in a consulting or owner’s-engineer setting, covering both overhead and underground utility client experience is a strong plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Civil Structural Engineering or a related field.
- PE (Professional Engineer) license preferred.
- EIT (Engineer in Training) certification required if not licensed.
- Proficiency with PLS-CADD and POLE TOWER for overhead line design.
- Familiarity with underground transmission line analysis and typical tools/workflows for ampacity thermal rating, cable pulling, and duct-bank design (e.g., CYMCAP or equivalent).
- Demonstrated application of NESC and ASCE methods for overhead transmission line design.
- Working knowledge of underground cable systems including XLPE HV cables, bonding, grounding, joints, terminations, vault manhole design, and HDD trench details.
- Strong writing and client-facing communication skills to lead technical meetings, defend design decisions, and coordinate with multiple disciplines.
