Job Description
The Survey Crew Chief at Atwell is responsible for leading survey activities on diverse projects, operating survey equipment, and ensuring accurate data collection for land development and renewable energy sites, while mentoring team members and maintaining safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform survey activities such as leveling, traversing, topographic mapping, construction layout, as-built surveys, boundary surveys, and profile and cross-section surveys
- Set up, adjust, and operate Trimble survey equipment including total station, data collector, and GPS equipment
- Measure distances, angles, and elevations for staking purposes
- Review survey field calculations and make adjustments as needed
- Locate or establish vertical and horizontal control points
- Utilize Trimble equipment to locate existing features and utilities
- Prepare accurate field notes and complete as-built drawings
- Maintain survey work-issued vehicle, laptop, and equipment
- Follow safety protocols and ensure compliance with policies and standards
- Read and interpret engineering plans
- Mentor and assist with training and professional development of survey crew members
Requirements
- At least 10 years of experience in a Survey Crew Chief role.
- Ability to effectively communicate with contractors, inspectors, and team leaders.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans.
- Experience with survey activities such as leveling, traversing, topographic mapping, construction layout, as-built surveys, boundary surveys, and profile and cross-section surveys.
- Ability to set up, adjust, and operate Trimble survey equipment including total station, data collector, and GPS equipment.
- Ability to measure distances, angles, and elevations for staking purposes.
- Ability to review survey field calculations and adjust when needed.
- Ability to locate or establish vertical and horizontal control.

- Willingness to commute to and from sites daily in a company-provided truck.
- Follow Atwell’s safety protocols and ensure product quality by following Atwell, client, local, and state policies, best practices, and standards.
- Work independently as a one-person crew or collaborate with a survey crew member.
- Attend paid training and development event opportunities.
- Be a subject matter expert and mentor to survey crew members, assisting with new hire training, career planning, and professional development.
- Availability for occasional overnight travel (preferred).
