Job Description
A field-focused Civil Subject Matter Expert responsible for overseeing and coordinating civil construction activities on utility-scale solar projects across the U.S., ensuring quality, safety, and compliance from pre-construction through commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the civil scope on site for utility-scale solar projects
- Lead daily coordination of grading, earthwork, stormwater drainage, access roads, foundations, and civil interfaces
- Ensure compliance with constructability, quality, and safety standards
- Verify survey control, interpret plans, review submittals, and manage as-built documentation
- Establish QA/QC checks, witness tests and inspections, and track NCRs and corrective actions
- Maintain project schedules, track quantities and productivity, and validate pay applications and change orders
- Maintain documentation such as photo logs, field sketches, punch lists, and turnover packages
- Champion site safety and integrate civil methods into safety plans and daily briefings
Requirements
- 7 to 12 years of experience in civil construction for utility-scale solar or comparable large industrial linear projects such as renewables, T&D, data centers, or heavy civil projects, with extensive field execution required.
- Proficiency with Civil 3D for plan interpretation and markups, Bluebeam, and quantity takeoffs, with working knowledge of hydrology stormwater tools such as Hydraflow, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, or similar.
- Experience owning the civil scope on site, including leading daily coordination for grading earthwork, stormwater drainage, access roads, foundations, and BOP civil interfaces, ensuring compliance and constructability.
- Ability to interpret IFC plans, submit RFIs, review submittals, manage redlines and as-builts, and drive value-engineering solutions.
- Experience establishing QA/QC checks, witnessing tests and inspections, tracking NCRs and corrective actions, and identifying risks early with implementation of mitigations.
- Ability to maintain 2-4 week look-ahead plans, track quantities and productivity, validate pay applications and change orders for civil work, and maintain documentation such as photo logs, field sketches, as-builts, punch lists, and civil turnover packages.
- Demonstrated safety leadership by championing site safety, integrating civil means and methods into JHAs, traffic lift plans, and daily briefings.
- Experience with mass grading, drainage hydrology, erosion sediment control, access roads, foundations, survey control, and machine control GPS workflows.
- Knowledge of SWPPP, IBC, state and local grading and stormwater ordinances, and comfort interpreting geotechnical reports and survey deliverables.
- Soft skills including being a clear communicator, decisive in the field, collaborative with EPCs and subcontractors, and proven ability to mentor field engineers and foremen.
- Valid driver’s license.
- OSHA-30 certification or willingness to obtain OSHA-30 certification.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field preferred; PE license strongly preferred or ability to obtain it.
- Experience with multi-hundred-MW solar programs, BESS co-location, and T&D interconnect civil interfaces is a plus.
- Prior office design coordination experience including RFIs, submittals, grading model review to expedite field decisions, and exposure to earned value, production tracking, and change-order development for civil scopes is a plus.
