Job Description
The Electrical Engineer will support power generation and delivery projects by leading design, analysis, and interconnection studies for high-voltage electrical systems, substations, and renewable energy facilities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead high-voltage power engineering design from project kickoff to issuance for construction across generation, transmission, distribution, and substations.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including substation physical, PC, SCADA, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, studies, construction, procurement, and project management.
- Prepare design packages, technical documents, reports, specifications, BOMs, estimates, and outage plans.
- Support proposals and change orders with technical scopes and effort estimates.
- Perform site visits, walkdowns, and client meetings as needed.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and codes such as NEC, NESC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, and USDA.
- Conduct interdisciplinary reviews to ensure interface alignment across disciplines.
- Perform power system studies including load flow, dynamic, short circuit, grounding, cable ampacity, and protection coordination analyses.
- Review utility interconnection studies for compliance and produce technical reports.
- Utilize engineering tools such as PSSE, PSCAD, ETAP, CYME, SKM, PowerWorld, and others for analysis and modeling.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET Accredited program
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification is desired for Level I through III
- Professional Engineer (PE) License is desired for Level IV and above
- Experience in leading HV power engineering design from kickoff to IFC across generation, transmission, distribution, and substations
- Experience coordinating daily with substation physical, PC, SCADA, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, studies, construction, procurement, and project management teams
- Ability to prepare check design packages and technical documents including design criteria, drawings, reports, specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), estimates, studies, commissioning outage plans, and scopes
- Support proposals and change orders with technical scopes and level-of-effort estimates
- Track scope, schedule, and budget with Project Manager and Discipline Manager to deliver accurate, quality work
- Perform occasional site visits, walkdowns, and client meetings
- Ensure compliance with NEC, NESC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, USDA, and internal QA/QC standards
- Conduct interdisciplinary reviews to align interfaces across all disciplines
- Perform PSSE PSCAD load flow dynamic studies, tune benchmark renewable models, and document results
- Work within ISO RTO processes including ERCOT, MISO, SPP, and support FERC pro-forma for LGIP, SGIP, DER impact studies, injection analyses, and LMP congestion reviews
- Apply standards such as NERC PRC MOD, IEEE 2800, 1547, and experience with PRC-019, 024, 029, and MOD-026, 027 is preferred
- Execute electrical studies including load flow, reactive power, short circuit, grounding, cable ampacity, energy loss, harmonics, protection coordination, arc flash, insulation coordination, induced voltages, TOV, and TRV
- Review utility interconnection studies for compliance with PPA utility requirements and produce clear technical reports
- Proficiency with tools such as PSSE, PSCAD, PSLF, ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, CDEGS, SKM, PowerWorld, ASPEN Power, and CYME
- Ability to perform load flow, reactive, short circuit, grounding, cable ampacity, energy loss, harmonics, protection coordination, arc flash, insulation coordination, induced voltages, TOV, and TRV studies
- Experience supporting interconnection and impact studies for utility projects
- Ability to interpret standards including NERC PRC MOD, IEEE 2800, 1547, and PRC-019, 024, 029, MOD-026, 027
- Physical ability to perform site visits and walkdowns as required
