Job Description

The Field Technician is responsible for maintaining and operating utility-scale solar PV power plants, including troubleshooting, repairing, and inspecting electrical systems, while ensuring safety and compliance standards are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor PV plant operation through SCADA systems
  • Perform commissioning, testing, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of solar PV systems and components
  • Supervise contractors to ensure safe, high-quality, and timely maintenance activities
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, procedures, and electrical codes
  • Conduct corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance on solar PV systems
  • Perform onsite installation, repairs, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment
  • Analyze technical failures and prepare technical reports
  • Collaborate with internal teams to produce data for regulatory reporting
  • Create and follow operating, switching, maintenance, safety, and environmental procedures
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting of electrical equipment including transformers, inverters, and control systems
  • Manage work orders, procurement documentation, and material stock levels
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience as a PV solar technician or 6 years of experience in a non-solar electrical maintenance role.
  • Proficient understanding of Electrical schematics and electrical principles.
  • Ability to perform testing, switching, and troubleshooting of low, medium, and high voltage equipment, including transformers, breakers, relays, contactors, motors, trackers, DC array, and inverters.
  • Ability to create and follow operating, switching, maintenance, safety, and environmental procedures.
  • Proficiency in performing onsite installations, repairs, and troubleshooting of solar PV systems.
  • Experience performing corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance for solar PV systems.
  • Experience performing site root analysis and applying root cause analysis techniques on major and recurring faults.
  • Ability to investigate technical failures and prepare formal technical reports.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal teams to collect and produce data for reporting to agencies such as NERC, EPA, OSHA, etc.
  • Ability to perform testing using IV Curve Tracers, Power Quality Meters, Insulation Resistance Testers, Multimeters, and other equipment as needed.
  • Proven computer skills in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be available for night, overtime, weekend, and holiday work as required, and support responsibilities outside scheduled hours if needed.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Valid U.S. Driver license with acceptable MVR history.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical co-workers and vendors.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective jackets or aprons, and arm guards.
  • Physical ability to sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire shift.
  • Physical ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and be on-call for emergencies.
