Job Description

The Staff Software Engineer - Android is a technical leader responsible for shaping the architecture, design, and development of the Alarm.com Android application, driving large-scale features, mentoring engineers, and ensuring scalable, maintainable, and high-performance mobile solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical direction and architectural vision for the Android application.
  • Lead the design and implementation of large-scale features and platform-level initiatives.
  • Lead complex, cross-cutting projects through the full software lifecycle, collaborating with multiple teams.
  • Write high-quality, well-tested, production-ready code for the Android platform.
  • Design and implement real-time video streaming features using Android media frameworks.
  • Establish and evolve architectural patterns to improve developer productivity and code quality.
  • Mentor and coach engineers to enhance their technical and professional skills.
  • Evaluate and adopt new Android technologies, frameworks, and tools.
  • Identify and drive solutions to significant technical challenges and systemic issues.
  • Improve team performance through tooling, processes, CI/CD, and developer experience initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 8 years of professional Android development experience with a track record of increasing technical responsibility.
  • Deep proficiency in Kotlin and the modern Android ecosystem including Jetpack Compose, Coroutines Flow, and Android SDK.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the architecture and delivery of large-scale Android applications.
  • Strong understanding of Android architecture patterns such as MVVM, MVI, and Clean Architecture, and the ability to design and evolve architectural frameworks.
  • Extensive experience with RESTful APIs, JSON parsing, and backend service integration.
  • Strong understanding of asynchronous programming using Coroutines and Flow.
  • Proven ability to mentor and elevate other engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and technical coaching.
  • Experience leading cross-functional collaboration with iOS engineers, backend teams, QA, Product, and UX.
  • Strong understanding of the Gradle build system, including custom tasks, plugins, build variants, and modular project structures.
  • Experience with version control using Git and collaborative development workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT to streamline development while maintaining engineering standards.
  • Ability to review and validate AI-generated code, tests, and documentation for correctness and maintainability.
