Job Description

An acoustics engineer at Alarm.com is responsible for designing, testing, and optimizing audio systems such as speakers and microphones for smart home security products, collaborating with cross-functional teams and overseas partners to ensure high performance, waterproofing, and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the expert on acoustics principles and guide design decisions.
  • Perform benchmarking and testing of speaker and microphone systems to verify performance against specifications.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers to integrate acoustic components and resolve related issues.
  • Work with overseas partners to set specifications and limits for factory testing.
  • Analyze test data to identify root causes of acoustic issues and validate fixes through experiments and DOEs.
  • Support R&D efforts to improve full duplex audio systems and advanced audio features.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing teams to establish test limits, manage part quality, and troubleshoot manufacturing issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in acoustics or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a consumer electronics environment with a specialization in acoustics.
  • Proficient in designing and testing MEMS Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems microphone systems for consumer electronic devices.
  • Skilled in designing and testing various speaker systems to deliver superior audio quality.
  • Knowledgeable in implementing waterproofing strategies for both speakers and microphones to ensure reliability and performance in harsh outdoor conditions.
  • Capable of setting up demonstrations for both technical and non-technical audiences to illustrate acoustic principles and design trade-offs.
  • Experience working collaboratively with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven track record of working with overseas factories to establish test limits for Final Assembly Test Process audio tests, manage part quality, and debug manufacturing issues.
  • Ability to specify appropriate test equipment based on budget constraints and test requirements.
  • Effective communication skills in English are essential for collaboration and documentation.
