Job Description

The Commercial Manager supports the development and execution of US market strategies for battery energy storage projects, including business development, commercial negotiations, and securing contracted revenue, while managing relationships and market analysis to drive project growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of US market strategy and develop new business opportunities in priority markets
  • Assist in commercial negotiations for project agreements and secure contracted revenue for US projects
  • Analyze market developments, track RFP opportunities, and monitor regulatory changes to inform offtake strategy
  • Support the management of offtake agreements, including design workshops and product development
  • Prepare responses to RFP opportunities and present contracted revenue opportunities to leadership
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with potential offtakers such as data centers, retailers, traders, and corporates
  • Support procurement strategy implementation, manage supply chain risks, and oversee long lead item procurement
  • Negotiate commercial terms for project agreements, including supply and balance of plant agreements
  • Collaborate with legal, technical, and finance teams to ensure project agreements align with commercial goals
  • Manage timelines for commercial discussions and finalization of project agreements
  • Develop and maintain supplier relationships to ensure alignment with commercial and operational schedules
  • Coordinate commercial and FID teams through project development stages, including lender Q&A
  • Identify and analyze new market opportunities and support presentations to the Investment Committee
  • Assist in originating and structuring deal opportunities, including managing development expenses and preparing MOUs
  • Support business development workshops and execute strategic workflows within the commercial team

Requirements

  • Support the implementation of US market strategy, develop and execute new business development opportunities in priority markets, and support commercial negotiations for project agreements to secure contracted revenue for US projects.
  • Support the identification of emerging trends, risks, and opportunities in the US battery energy storage market, including analyzing market developments, tracking RFP opportunities, resiliency funding programs, regulatory changes, and commercial trends to inform offtake strategy and contract structuring.
  • Maintain a general understanding of energy markets and BESS offtake opportunities across priority US markets, including ERCOT, WECC, CAISO, MISO, and PJM.
  • Support the management of origination and deal execution of offtake agreements, including supporting discussions on offtake design workshops and developing, evaluating, and implementing new offtake products and offerings tailored to the needs of offtakers such as corporates and retailers.
  • Assist in preparing responses to offtake RFP opportunities, ensuring timely submission and alignment with Akaysha’s commercial strategy.
  • Facilitate the cultivation and maintenance of strong relationships with potential offtakers, including data centers, retailers, traders, financial intermediaries, optimizers, and corporates.
  • Support the implementation of the US team’s procurement strategy, including managing supply chain risks and long lead item procurement.
  • Negotiate commercial terms of project agreements, including early works agreements, long lead item procurement, battery supply agreements, and balance of plant agreements.
  • Conduct gap risks analysis across project agreements and collaborate with legal, technical, and finance teams to ensure project agreements reflect Akaysha’s commercial goals and conform with IC and Board approvals.
  • Manage timelines and sequencing for early-stage commercial discussions through to finalization of long-form agreements, ensuring alignment with project development and FID timelines.
  • Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships, facilitating communication and ensuring supplier engagements align with commercial strategy and operational schedules.
  • Facilitate coordination of the commercial and FID teams through FID, including on lender Q&A and FID packs.
  • Support the identification and analysis of new market opportunities in Priority Markets, including partnerships with developers, data centers, and utilities.
  • Support the presentation of opportunities to the Investment Committee (IC).
  • Support the US commercial team in originating and structuring deal opportunities, including strategic structuring, managing devex at risk spend, preparing MOUs, and cross-pillar coordination.
  • Support regular US business development opportunity workshops and ensure timely execution of strategy workflows by the commercial team.
  • Demonstrate the ability to prioritize team tasks and manage workloads to ensure impactful workstreams receive necessary attention and resources, including timely escalation to the General Manager.
  • Apply a collaborative approach to decision-making, problem-solving, and navigating complexity, including identifying issues, options, and pathways to resolution.
  • Support commercial negotiations with a range of counterparties and communicate at a manager level, presenting commercial opportunities and updates to the General Manager and broader team.
  • Proactively manage workstreams and information flow to ensure issues are clearly identified and solutions are effectively managed.
  • Possess general knowledge of the energy industry, batteries, and existing relationships in key US markets (highly desirable).
