Job Description
The Research Scientist Engineer in Mobile Manipulation at Toyota Research Institute focuses on developing and integrating robotic systems capable of performing complex, human-like manipulation tasks, navigating among people, and learning to adapt over time using machine learning and real-world deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and integrate systems enabling robots to perform complex, human-level mobile manipulation tasks
- Leverage machine learning to combine perception, prediction, and action for robust robot behaviors
- Deploy and validate robotic systems in real-world environments, including homes
- Use simulation, large data sets, and real-world adaptation to improve robot performance
- Contribute to high-risk innovation and rigorous evaluation of robotic systems
Requirements
- Experience in developing and deploying systems in real-world environments, particularly in robotics or related fields.
- Strong understanding of machine learning techniques to marry perception, prediction, and action for robust, reactive, and coordinated robot behaviors.
- Ability to leverage large amounts of data and bootstrap from simulation to real-world scenarios.
- Experience in developing, validating, and integrating solutions for complex, human-level mobile manipulation tasks.
- Proficiency in software development related to robotics, machine learning, or AI systems.
- Educational background with a degree in a relevant field such as Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience in developing systems that enable robots to navigate with and among people.
- Ability to develop and implement high-quality, robust systems with rigorous evaluation of performance.
- Experience working in a fast-moving environment that demands high-risk innovation and learning from failures.
- Knowledge of perception, prediction, and action integration in robotic systems.
- Experience in working with simulation tools and real-world deployment for robotics applications.

Salary range between $176,000 and $264,000 per year (California-based roles)
