Job Description
The Senior Controls Engineer II at Solid Power is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining electrical control systems and PLC programs for industrial manufacturing equipment, working both independently and collaboratively to optimize machine performance and ensure safety in a fast-paced battery production environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and supervise electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery.
- Create PLC programs to control industrial manufacturing equipment.
- Assess and troubleshoot ladder logic programs to improve machine performance.
- Specify controls hardware including PLCs, IO modules, instrumentation, VFDs, and safety components.
- Lead PLC-related activities and respond to machine downtime promptly.
- Develop and maintain a revision management system for machine programming.
- Collaborate with other departments and team members to solve control system issues.
- Develop the skills of electrical support staff to enhance team expertise.
Requirements
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 10 years of related industry experience.
- Expertise in Allen Bradley PLC programming with Studio5000 Logix Designer, Studio5000 View Designer, and FT View Studio.
- Experience with NFPA 70 and Electrical Classification C1D1, C1D2, C2D1, and C2D2.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot equipment for improvement for quality and delivery.
- Experience with maintaining Asset Centre.
- Experience with SCADA development and Human Machine Interface (HMI) programming.
- Experience with machine networking using EthernetIP and developing interfaces between industrial control components.
- Ability to create PLC programs from the ground up to control industrial material chemical manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to assess ladder logic programs written by others and root-out problems as well as improve machine performance.
- Ability to safely create the programming required to operate industrial machines using PLCs.
- Ability to work both collaboratively with other engineers and independently to fully develop controls based on machine operational ideas.
- Specify controls hardware including PLCs, associated I/O, pressure, flow, temperature instrumentation, VFDs, circuit breakers, pneumatic valve banks, and industrial safety components.
- Develop and maintain a revision management system for all machine programming.
- Lead all PLC-related activities and respond immediately to any down machine conditions.
- Work in confined spaces and at heights, and withstand exposure to noise, vibration, and extreme temperatures.
- Ability to work safely in potentially hazardous environments and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary, including eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator or PAPR.
