Job Description
The Data Operations Engineer at Samsara is responsible for maintaining the health, performance, and reliability of the company's production data platform, including managing data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data integration and analytics to enable data-driven decision-making across various industries.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the health, stability, and performance of the production data platform, including data ingestion pipelines, processing jobs, and data warehousing.
- Respond to and resolve production data incidents, diagnosing root causes and implementing fixes to ensure data integrity.
- Design, implement, and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting systems for data pipelines and infrastructure.
- Manage, deploy, and maintain data and integration pipelines and APIs.
- Optimize data processing jobs and API performance for speed, scalability, and efficiency.
- Develop and enforce data validation and quality checks within pipelines to ensure data accuracy.
- Collaborate with DevOps teams to manage underlying cloud infrastructure hosting the data platform.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for operational procedures, pipeline architecture, and troubleshooting.
- Develop and deploy data pipelines, backend ingestion, or integration jobs for minor enhancements and bug fixes.
- Work with data from various sources, including CRM, product, marketing, order flow, support tickets, and finance data.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data engineering, data science, information technology, or equivalent engineering program.
- 3 years of experience in a Data Engineering, Data Operations, or SRE role supporting production data environments.
- Must have SQL experience to perform data analysis.
- Experience with Python or a similar scripting language.
- Exposure to ETL tools such as Fivetran, DBT, Workato, or equivalent.
- Experience with python-based API frameworks and API management tools.
- Experience with RDBMS such as MySQL, AWS RDS Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or equivalent.
- Experience with at least one major cloud provider such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience with data warehouses such as Databricks, Google BigQuery, AWS Redshift, Snowflake, or equivalent.
- Experience with CI/CD, DevOps tools, and practices.
- Experience with logging and monitoring tools such as Splunk, DataDog, AWS CloudWatch, or equivalent.
- Experience with AWS services including Serverless components such as API Gateway, Lambda, S3, SNS, SQS, and SecretsManager.
- Ability to diagnose root causes, implement fixes, and ensure data integrity for production data incidents.
- Ability to design, implement, and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting systems for all production data pipelines and infrastructure.
- Ability to manage, deploy, and maintain data and integrations pipelines and APIs.
- Ability to continuously identify and implement performance optimizations to improve data processing speed, scalability, and API performance.
- Ability to develop and enforce data validation and quality checks within pipelines to minimize errors and inconsistencies.
- Ability to collaborate with DevOps teams on managing the underlying infrastructure hosting the data platform.
- Ability to maintain comprehensive and up-to-date documentation for operational procedures, pipeline architectures, and troubleshooting runbooks.
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to navigate complex distributed systems.
- Proactive communication skills to assist with incidents and communicate proactively with business users and stakeholders.
- Good project management skills to relay findings and solutions across technical and non-technical audiences.
