Job Description
A part-time Scientist I Boat Captain responsible for operating and maintaining vessels to support coastal and inland environmental restoration projects in Florida, ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and logistical coordination in dynamic field conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain vessels in coastal and inland waterways, including navigation through narrow channels and sensitive environments
- Safely trailer, launch, and retrieve vessels using non-CDL truck and trailer combinations
- Ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard, state, and company safety and environmental regulations
- Coordinate vessel operations with field staff and provide logistical support for project implementation
- Support SCUBA-based field activities and ensure safety protocols and AAUS standards are followed
- Maintain accurate vessel logs, records, and documentation
Requirements
- Valid boat captain license
- Demonstrated experience operating vessels in both coastal and inland waterways, including restricted narrow passages and around in-water overwater structures
- Proficiency in trailering, launching, and retrieving vessels with non-CDL truck and trailer combinations
- Minimum of 1 to 3 years of experience operating motorboats 20 to 25 feet in length
- SCUBA certification and current CPR First Aid certification
- Experience in coastal, estuarine waters, and adjacent rivers, with familiarity with tides, currents, shallow drafts, and sandbars
- Proficiency in GPS, navigation systems, and chartplotter use
- Ability to travel throughout Florida, with per diem provided for overnight travel
- Strong commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and professional conduct
