Job Description

Redwood Materials is seeking a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and integration of high voltage electrical systems for renewable energy projects, including substations and grid interconnections, supporting the company's mission to build a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design high voltage AC electrical systems for industrial substations (69kV to 345kV) and integrate with transmission lines and distribution systems
  • Review and improve existing substation designs for reliability and stability
  • Develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay settings, and grounding plans
  • Perform grid simulation and stability studies using industry-standard software
  • Interface with utilities and ISO RTOs for interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance
  • Conduct short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies
  • Evaluate and select high voltage equipment such as switchgear, transformers, and protection relays
  • Lead high voltage design packages from concept through commissioning
  • Coordinate with civil and structural engineers on substation layout and site development
  • Support construction, testing, and commissioning teams with field engineering and troubleshooting
  • Review vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
  • Participate in technical bid evaluations and scope gap analysis
  • Lead research and development efforts on medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA)
  • Mentor junior engineers and develop workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity, with the requirement to obtain PE licensure in Nevada and South Carolina within 2 months of start date
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in high voltage electrical design, preferably in EPC environments
  • Advanced proficiency in Transmission-level load flow and stability analysis using PSSE and PSLF
  • Experience with electromagnetic transient simulations using PSCAD, EMTC, or similar software
  • Experience with relay settings development using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent software
  • Experience with relay coordination and fault studies using ASPEN OneLiner or similar software
  • Experience with power system modeling using ETAP, SKM, or similar software
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to independently manage high voltage design packages from concept through commissioning
  • Experience in reviewing and evaluating the design of existing substations to provide recommendations for improving reliability and stability
  • Experience in developing single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans for substations
  • Experience performing grid simulation and stability studies, including short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies
  • Experience evaluating and selecting high voltage equipment including switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs, CTs, and protection relays
  • Experience serving as Electrical Engineer of Record for assigned projects
  • Experience leading code compliance reviews with NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA standards and providing technical guidance to internal teams
  • Experience collaborating with civil and structural engineers on substation layout, foundations, and site development
  • Experience supporting facilities, construction, and commissioning teams with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Experience reviewing vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
  • Experience participating in technical bid evaluations and identifying scope gaps
  • Experience leading R&D efforts for feasibility analysis of medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
  • Strong understanding of protection and control systems, SCADA, and substation automation
  • Field experience in construction and commissioning of high voltage systems is highly preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written, and visual formats
  • Willingness to work full-time in the position
