Job Description

The Staff Controls Engineer will design, implement, and support automation and control systems for Redwood Materials' battery recycling operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable chemical processing through programming, commissioning, and optimizing industrial controls technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and debug controls software for battery recycling equipment, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and DCS systems
  • Program, test, and validate automation sequences and interlocks for chemical process units
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to develop instrumentation and control strategies for new systems
  • Lead on-site commissioning, including IO checks, logic validation, and process tuning
  • Develop diagnostics, alarms, and fault recovery strategies to ensure system uptime and maintainability
  • Optimize control loops and automation performance for operational excellence
  • Document control logic, operating procedures, and system architecture for maintenance and knowledge transfer
  • Support system integration with data monitoring, reporting, and analytics platforms
  • Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards for all control systems

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 10 years of experience in industrial controls or automation engineering, ideally in a large-scale process manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience programming PLCs and HMIs, such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, or similar systems.
  • Familiarity with SCADA and DCS systems and real-time process control strategies.
  • Strong understanding of industrial sensors, instrumentation, and advanced control algorithms.
  • Experience supporting system commissioning and startup in a live production environment.
  • Ability to design, implement, test, and debug controls software for cathode production equipment, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and DCS.
  • Ability to program, test, and debug automation sequences and interlocks to ensure safe and efficient operation of chemical process units.
  • Experience leading commissioning and bring-up efforts on-site, including IO checks, logic validation, and process tuning.
  • Ability to develop robust diagnostics, alarms, and fault recovery strategies to ensure high system uptime and maintainability.
  • Skill in optimizing control loops and automation performance to support continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  • Ability to document control logic, operating procedures, and system architecture for future maintenance and knowledge transfer.
  • Experience supporting integration with data systems for monitoring, reporting, and advanced analytics.
  • Knowledge of process safety and regulatory standards to ensure all systems comply.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Physical ability to wear proper PPE when necessary and perform job duties safely in both office and production plant environments.
  • Excellent communication skills to clearly convey technical information.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation to support automation and controls systems.
  • Availability to work full-time in a fully onsite role based in Reno, NV, with infrequent travel less than 10%.
