The Senior BESS Design Manager at Redwood Materials is responsible for leading the full design and engineering efforts for energy storage infrastructure projects, managing cross-disciplinary teams from concept to construction, and ensuring successful deployment of grid-scale battery energy storage systems.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and lead infrastructure and equipment installation projects from conceptualization to construction.
Coordinate project schedules, funding, and resource requirements with internal teams and external partners.
Oversee permitting, construction documentation, and transmittal processes.
Ensure effective communication with stakeholders throughout project deployment.
Support feasibility studies, value engineering, and options analysis for energy storage systems.
Build and maintain cross-functional relationships to ensure project alignment.
Apply lean construction principles and utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) for integrated design.
Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering, or demonstrate exceptional ability in the electrical engineering field through equivalent experience
PE or RA License is preferred
At least 5 years of relevant work experience in engineering, construction, manufacturing, or project management
Deep understanding of grid-scale energy storage technologies and balance-of-plant equipment such as inverters, transformers, switchgear, HVAC, and fire suppression systems
Strong working knowledge of electrical system design, interconnection requirements, and utility-scale project execution
Knowledge of battery systems, electrical protection, power conversion, medium and high voltage systems, communication systems, and control systems
Familiarity with relevant standards and codes including UL 9540, UL 1973, UL 1741, IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and IEC
Experience managing multi-disciplinary scopes within A/E or Design Engineering firms
Experience with commercial or industrial electrical installations and electricity distribution systems
Ability to prioritize and execute many tasks in parallel with excellent attention to detail and quality decision-making
Strong communication skills for managing internal stakeholders and external parties
Experience managing project schedules, funding, and resource requirements for infrastructure and equipment installation projects
Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with cross-functional teams to ensure program alignment
Knowledge of lean construction principles and fully integrated design using Building Information Modeling (BIM)
Experience supporting, leading feasibility studies, value engineering efforts, and options analysis
Experience managing greenfield and brownfield infrastructure and equipment install projects through conceptualization, feasibility, funding, design, change management, and construction
Experience managing permitting and construction documents, transmittals, and ensuring compliance with local codes and regulations
Ability to influence teams outside of direct reporting structure and drive cross-functional project execution
