Job Description

Redwood Materials is seeking a Senior BESS Design Manager to lead the full design and engineering efforts for energy storage infrastructure projects, from concept to construction, focusing on grid-scale battery energy storage systems and ensuring seamless project execution and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead infrastructure and tool installation projects from conceptualization to construction.
  • Coordinate project schedules, funding, and resource requirements with internal and external teams.
  • Oversee permitting, construction documentation, and transmittals to ensure compliance and progress.
  • Drive design and engineering efforts, including feasibility studies, value engineering, and options analysis.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for stakeholders to ensure effective communication and project alignment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering, or demonstrate exceptional ability in the electrical engineering field through equivalent experience
  • PE or RA License is preferred
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in engineering, construction, manufacturing, or project management
  • Deep understanding of grid-scale energy storage technologies and balance-of-plant equipment such as inverters, transformers, switchgear, HVAC, and fire suppression systems
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical system design, interconnection requirements, and utility-scale project execution
  • Knowledge of battery systems, electrical protection, power conversion, medium and high voltage systems, communication systems, and control systems
  • Familiarity with relevant standards and codes including UL 9540, UL 1973, UL 1741, IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and IEC
  • Ability to prioritize and execute many tasks in parallel with excellent attention to detail and quality decision-making
  • Strong communication skills for managing internal stakeholders and external parties
  • Experience with managing permitting and construction documents through transmittal to permitting, construction, and other parties
  • Experience managing project schedules, coordinating with procurement and construction partners to ensure overall schedule success
  • Ability to identify project resource requirements and highlight gaps or constraints
  • Experience building and maintaining strong relationships with cross-functional teams to ensure program alignment
  • Knowledge of lean construction principles and fully integrated design using Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • Support and lead feasibility studies, value engineering efforts, and options analysis
  • Experience with commercial or industrial electrical installations and electricity distribution systems
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary scopes within A/E or Design Engineering firms
  • Thrives under pressure and in ambiguous environments
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
