A mechanical engineer at Redwood Materials will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating high-power energy storage and conversion products, leading mechanical design efforts, and potentially managing a team to scale production in a fast-paced startup environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and integrate high-power energy storage products, including thermal management, structural design, and packaging of power electronics
Perform mechanical analysis such as CFD and FEA to validate designs and ensure performance under real-world conditions
Collaborate with electrical and systems engineers to ensure seamless mechanical integration into overall system architecture
Select materials and components in collaboration with suppliers to ensure cost-effective, high-quality solutions
Lead and manage a mechanical engineering team, including recruiting, mentoring, and overseeing project goals and timelines
Requirements
A BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong focus in power conversion or energy storage products, ideally for mass production of 10,000 units per year or higher.
Proven track record as a senior mechanical engineer, with hands-on design, prototyping, and launch experience in medium-to-high volume production.
Experience in mechanical analysis such as CFD, FEA, thermal analysis, to validate designs and ensure performance under real-world conditions.
Proficiency in CAD software, e.g., SolidWorks, and analysis tools such as CFD and FEA.
Experience developing tools, infrastructure, and design practices for a growing team.
Understanding of the relationship between high voltage electronics and the mechanical systems that support and surround them, e.g., insulation systems and thermal systems.
Ability to select materials and components, working closely with suppliers and vendors to ensure cost-effective, high-quality solutions.
Ability to perform the mechanical design and development of high-volume, high-power energy conversion products from concept to deployment, including thermal management, structural design, packaging integration of power electronics, and integration with grid infrastructure.
Ability to act as the primary mechanical engineering expert, driving innovation and solving technical challenges at a large scale.
Experience managing projects, including being accountable for project goals and timelines.
Experience recruiting, mentoring, and managing a high-performance mechanical engineering team.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships with all levels of the organization and presenting to internal and external executives.
Physical ability to perform essential job functions safely and successfully, consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting productivity standards.
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other standards.
Ability to work in challenging conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods.
Essential physical requirements such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing.
Willingness to work occasional weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job.
Willingness to undertake occasional travel as required.

Compensation range: $117,500 - $227,500 USD
