Job Description
The Lead Process Engineer Battery Recycling will oversee the design, development, and commissioning of a new battery recycling plant, focusing on process optimization, equipment selection, and operational readiness to support Redwood Materials' energy transition initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and develop process design, including process modeling, mass and energy balances, and related documentation
- Develop and optimize flowsheets for battery recycling processes
- Specify, size, and select process equipment
- Integrate processing assets to maximize product value
- Iterate quickly to solve process challenges with innovative solutions
- Communicate design concepts clearly within the team
- Guide and work with testwork to optimize and de-risk the process design
- Lead commissioning and operational readiness activities during plant startup
Requirements
- Full ownership of process design, including the process model, mass and energy balance, and all related design documentation
- Flowsheet development and optimization
- Specifying, sizing, and selecting process equipment
- Integration with other processing assets to extract maximum product value
- Rapidly iterating to solve process challenges with creative and technically sound solutions
- Communicating designs early and clearly across the team
- Work with and guiding testwork to parameterize, de-risk, and optimize the design
- Developing commissioning and operational readiness and taking a leading role in commissioning and ramp-up
- Proactively jumping into problems, identifying key challenges, and framing analysis tests necessary to solve them
- Having a strong working knowledge of mechanical processing, material conveyance, and solid-liquid separation plant and equipment
- Experience in process engineering design and commissioning
- Holding a B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemical or Process Engineering
- Having at least 5 years of experience in industrial process design, scale-up, and commissioning
- Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production environments
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed
- Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in alignment with company and regulatory standards
- Ability to communicate clearly
- Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time
- Availability to work in a split work environment between office and production facility
- May require occasional work on weekends or alternate shifts to support production needs
