A Functional Safety Engineer at Redwood Materials is responsible for ensuring compliance with safety standards and supporting the development, certification, and safety of energy storage systems, focusing on hardware and software safety in the context of battery recycling and energy storage technologies.
Key Responsibilities
Lead compliance activities for ESS functional safety standards (UL 1998, UL 991, UL 5500).
Support certification efforts and align product development with safety requirements.
Apply safety principles and methodologies to hardware and software of energy storage systems.
Develop hazard analyses, safety cases, FMEA, and test strategies.
Manage certification processes with third-party testing bodies to ensure timely approvals.
Translate safety standards into actionable requirements for cross-functional teams.
Develop and execute hazard mitigation and validation strategies.
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to streamline safety processes.
Maintain relationships with certification bodies and industry partners to stay updated on safety standards.
Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field
Hands-on experience in embedded software development, ideally within safety-critical or regulated environments
Proficiency in C for real-time embedded systems
Strong background in UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500 standards
Familiarity with international functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC UL 60730, ISO 26262, or ISO 13849 (preferred)
Experience developing or working directly with microcontroller-based systems, including low-level software or firmware (preferred)
Demonstrated ability to apply functional safety methodologies such as hazard analysis, safety cases, and V V planning
Experience managing compliance or certification processes with third-party testing certification bodies
Experience supporting certification efforts and aligning product development with functional safety requirements
Ability to translate complex safety standards into actionable requirements for cross-functional teams
Ability to develop, document, and execute hazard mitigation and validation strategies, including supporting testing and verification activities
Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical requirements to diverse stakeholders
Experience working with Energy Storage Systems, power electronics, or safety-critical systems (preferred)
Ability to support certification activities and coordinate with certification bodies such as NRTLs
Ability to represent the company in standards development activities to help shape emerging ESS safety requirements
