Job Description
A Functional Safety Engineer at Redwood Materials is responsible for ensuring compliance with safety standards and developing safety practices for energy storage systems, focusing on hardware and software safety, certification processes, and standards development to support safe and sustainable battery technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead compliance activities for ESS functional safety standards (UL 1998, UL 991, UL 5500)
- Support certification efforts and align product development with safety requirements
- Develop safety principles, hazard analyses, safety cases, and test strategies for hardware and software
- Represent Redwood in standards development activities for ESS safety requirements
- Manage compliance programs with certification bodies to ensure timely approvals
- Translate safety standards into actionable requirements for cross-functional teams
- Provide technical guidance on functional safety practices and address feedback
- Develop and execute hazard mitigation and validation strategies
- Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to streamline safety processes
- Maintain relationships with certification bodies and industry partners to stay updated on safety standards
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
- Strong background in UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500 standards.
- Familiarity with international functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or ISO 13849.
- Experience working with Energy Storage Systems, power electronics, or safety-critical systems.
- Demonstrated ability to apply functional safety methodologies such as hazard analysis, safety cases, and V&V planning.
- Experience managing compliance or certification processes with third-party testing certification bodies.
- Support certification efforts and align product development with functional safety requirements.
- Apply safety principles and methodologies to ESS hardware and software.
- Facilitate and lead the development of FMEA, hazard analyses, safety cases, and test strategies.
- Represent Redwood in standards development activities to help shape emerging requirements for ESS functional safety.
- Work with certification bodies (NRTLs) to establish and manage compliance programs for new technologies, ensuring timely approvals to support product milestones.
- Partner closely with engineering and product teams to integrate safety requirements into development cycles.
- Translate complex safety standards into actionable requirements for cross-functional teams.
- Provide technical guidance on functional safety practices and address feedback to ensure product compliance.
- Develop, document, and execute hazard mitigation and validation strategies.
- Support testing and verification activities to ensure system safety performance.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve compliance and safety issues proactively.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product design teams to streamline compliance and safety processes for ESS.
- Maintain strong relationships with certification bodies and industry partners to stay current with evolving safety requirements.
- Physical ability to perform essential job functions safely and successfully in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and other standards, including meeting productivity requirements.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other standards.
- Ability to work in office, lab, and manufacturing environments, including exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes while protected by PPE.
- Physical capability to perform climbing, standing, stooping, or typing as required.
- Willingness to work occasionally on weekends, nights, or on-call, and to travel occasionally.
Benefits & Perks
Compensation/salary range: $153,000 - $248,500 USD
Work environment includes office, lab, and manufacturing settings
Ability to work in challenging conditions with PPE, including exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes
Occasional work on weekends, nights, or on-call responsibilities
Occasional travel
