Job Description
A Functional Safety Engineer at Redwood Materials is responsible for ensuring compliance with safety standards and supporting the development, certification, and safety analysis of energy storage systems, focusing on battery safety, hardware, and software integration to promote safe and sustainable energy storage technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead compliance activities for ESS functional safety, including UL standards
- Support certification efforts and align product development with safety requirements
- Develop safety principles, methodologies, and safety documentation for hardware and software
- Represent Redwood in standards development activities for ESS safety requirements
- Manage compliance programs with certification bodies to ensure timely approvals
- Translate safety standards into actionable requirements for cross-functional teams
- Provide technical guidance on functional safety practices and address feedback
- Develop hazard mitigation and validation strategies, and support testing activities
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to streamline safety processes
- Maintain relationships with certification bodies and industry partners to stay updated on safety standards
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
- Strong background in UL 1998, UL 991, and UL 5500 standards.
- Familiarity with international functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or ISO 13849 (preferred).
- Experience working with Energy Storage Systems, power electronics, or safety-critical systems.
- Demonstrated ability to apply functional safety methodologies such as hazard analysis, safety cases, and V&V planning.
- Experience managing compliance or certification processes with third-party testing certification bodies.
- Ability to translate complex safety standards into actionable requirements for cross-functional teams.
- Provide technical guidance on functional safety practices and address feedback to ensure product compliance.
- Develop, document, and execute hazard mitigation and validation strategies, including supporting testing and verification activities.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product design teams to streamline compliance and safety processes for ESS.
- Maintain strong relationships with certification bodies and industry partners to stay updated on safety requirements.
Benefits & Perks
Salary range: $153,000 - $248,500 USD
Full-time position
Work environment includes office, lab, and manufacturing settings
Potential for occasional work on weekends, nights, or on-call responsibilities
Occasional travel may be required
