Job Description
The Energy Optimization Engineering Intern supports the development and testing of predictive models and optimization strategies for energy management systems in microgrids and data centers, gaining hands-on experience in energy forecasting, mathematical modeling, and cloud integration within a renewable energy-focused company.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and validate time-series forecasting models for GPU power loads and market prices
- Integrate forecasts into Energy Management Systems (EMS) for autonomous decision-making
- Create high-fidelity mathematical models of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and microgrid components
- Apply optimization techniques such as Mixed-Integer Programming to resource allocation and scheduling
- Conduct EMS simulations and scenario testing to evaluate strategy performance
- Collaborate with cloud software teams to deploy optimization engines and predictive models in cloud environments
- Design and maintain APIs for real-time control signals and data exchange between cloud and site assets
Requirements
- MS or PhD in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or a related field
- Strong background in optimization techniques including mixed-integer, stochastic, robust, and convex optimization with applications to SCUC, SCED, or other electricity market problems
- Experience applying time series data forecasting to energy systems
- Excellent understanding of first-principles physics related to electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage and transformation, and basic thermal mechanics
- Ability to support development of the predictive intelligence layer used to manage energy for AI Data Centers and microgrids
- Ability to build and validate time-series forecasting models for GPU power loads and market prices
- Experience integrating multi-horizon forecasts into Energy Management Systems (EMS) to drive autonomous decision-making
- Develop high-fidelity mathematical models of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and microgrid components
- Utilize Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) and other mathematical optimization techniques to solve complex resource allocation and scheduling problems
- Conduct large-scale EMS simulations and scenario testing to validate strategy performance and stability under varying grid conditions
- Work closely with cloud software engineers to deploy optimization engines and predictive models into scalable cloud architectures
- Design and maintain high-performance APIs for real-time control signals and data exchange between cloud and site-level assets
- Ability to perform essential job functions in compliance with ADA, FMLA, and other relevant federal, state, and local regulations
- Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance in line with ADA, FMLA, and applicable standards
- Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE
- Possess essential physical capabilities such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing
Benefits & Perks
Compensation/salary range: $41 to $54.50 USD per hour
