Job Description
The Thermal Engineer at Planet is responsible for designing, analyzing, testing, and overseeing the thermal systems of their spacecraft and satellites, ensuring all components operate within specified temperature ranges throughout the mission lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the thermal design of key spacecraft subsystems and ensure components operate within temperature ranges throughout all mission phases.
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, optical, and mission operation teams to derive requirements and validate thermal performance.
- Drive thermal analysis, testing, and validation of spacecraft hardware and subsystems.
- Develop and oversee thermal hardware fabrication, interface control documents, and configuration management.
- Support test planning, qualification campaigns, and thermal interface definitions to ensure mission success.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Aerospace Engineering or other related engineering or science degree.
- At least 2 years of experience thermal designing spacecraft.
- Good understanding of heat transfer.
- Knowledge of thermal control technology of spacecraft.
- Ability to design tests proving thermal design.
- Experience in Thermal Desktop SINDA for spacecraft-level analysis or similar tools for chip-level analysis.
- Ability to progress initiatives while working independently and as part of a team.
- This position requires access to export-controlled information, and employment or hiring of a contractor is contingent upon the candidate's ability to access all applicable export-controlled information without additional export licensing being required by the Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.

US base salary range of 101,400 - 126,800 USD
