The Solar Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing utility-scale solar PV and energy storage systems, ensuring efficient site operations while adhering to safety protocols and supporting system monitoring, testing, and installation activities.
Key Responsibilities
Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and corrective repairs on AC and DC solar and energy storage systems
Monitor plant operations through SCADA systems and support commissioning, testing, and system modifications
Troubleshoot electrical systems and support maintenance activities
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities using CMMS software
Develop and implement safety procedures, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO)
Read, interpret, and develop work procedures, schematics, and safety protocols
Support installation tasks such as torquing, calibration, and use of specialized tools
Lead advanced troubleshooting across multiple OEM platforms and develop system diagnostics
Communicate site conditions, needs, and technical findings to stakeholders
Train and mentor junior technicians and develop work plans and maintenance schedules
Requirements
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience in large-scale solar operations and maintenance (O M) experience requirements vary by position level.
Competency in industrial or utility power operations, troubleshooting, and general maintenance procedures.
Proficiency in reading electrical schematics, operating SCADA systems, and using CMMS for maintenance tracking.
Strong computer skills, particularly in SCADA and CMMS applications.
Ability to perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and corrective repairs on AC and DC systems, including inverters, PV modules, transformers, switchgear, and high-voltage components.
Ability to monitor plant operations through SCADA and contribute to commissioning, testing, and system modifications.
Strict adherence to safety protocols, including Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), ensuring compliance with site procedures.
Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems and support maintenance as required.
Ability to work with remote operators to identify and resolve site issues efficiently.
Ability to maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities using CMMS software.
Ability to read, interpret, and develop complex work procedures, schematics, and safety protocols.
Ability to develop and implement Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures and electrical work plans.
Ability to verify tooling and parts against work plans, relay necessary adjustments, and generate reports on findings and recommendations.
Ability to train and mentor junior technicians, fostering safety standards and adherence to industry practices.
Ability to develop and execute work plans and maintenance schedules.
Physical and mental fitness to stand, walk (including covering 2 miles in a day), climb, bend, and kneel for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift and carry tools or equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
Maintain clear visual acuity with or without corrective lenses for reading schematics and working with tools and meters.
Handle precise tasks requiring fine motor skills and strong hand-eye coordination.
May be required to work outside of normal business hours and participate in on-call rotation schedules.
Advanced positions require at least 4 years of direct or related experience in the solar industry.
Develop and implement electrical work plans and advanced troubleshooting across multiple OEM platforms, including controls interface and system diagnostics.
Create complex schematics and work instructions.
Strong experience with industrial control interfaces.
Advanced organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize competing requests.
