Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator role involves operating and testing self-driving vehicles, collecting data, troubleshooting operational issues, and ensuring safety protocols are followed, while supporting the development and deployment of autonomous vehicle technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under various traffic conditions while ensuring safety and adherence to driving procedures
- Utilize proprietary software to collect data in real-world situations and provide detailed feedback to engineers
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve problems and meet mileage targets
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks such as washing and tire inflation
- Interact with the public to educate them about autonomous vehicle technology and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, stakeholders, and engineers, maintaining professionalism and safety
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness and safety protocols
Requirements
- Possess a current valid California driver’s license and have been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years.
- Have a clean driving record and be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test.
- Be able to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 6:00am-2:30pm PT (Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday), Afternoon/Evening 2:00pm-10:30pm PT (Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday), or Overnight 10:00pm-6:30am PT (Wednesday-Sunday).
- Be able to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to proper safety and operational driving procedures.
- Be able to perform daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions and conduct basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as washing vehicles and putting air in tires.
- Be able to troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues and meet mileage collection targets.
- Be able to operate standard field equipment including laptops, tablets, and smartphones for documentation, training, and real-time workflow procedures.
- Exhibit strong problem-solving skills by remaining calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues.
- Have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to communicate comfortably through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet.
- Be able to safely operate onboard safety and navigational systems while maintaining constant situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
- Be physically capable of sitting for 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours per day in an enclosed vehicle, including bending, squatting, stretching, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Be able to perform side and up/down movement of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary to operate a vehicle safely.
- Be able to work in a vehicle that may brake, swerve, slow, or stop abruptly, and operate foot pedals with feet.
- Demonstrate a passion to learn about autonomous vehicle processes and technology.
- Show a proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.
- Be self-driven, goal-oriented, and able to adapt to frequent changes and evolving conditions.
- Maintain professionalism, care, and personal accountability, adhering to safety standards and conduct expectations.
Benefits & Perks
Base pay of $27/hour for Morning and Afternoon Evening shifts, and $28.25/hour for Overnight shift
