Job Description
The role involves developing and integrating autonomous vehicle hardware systems, including design, validation, and collaboration with internal teams and external partners to bring AV hardware from concept to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the engineering development, design, and integration of autonomous vehicle hardware systems and components.
- Create and manage technical specifications, targets, architecture, and drawings for AV hardware.
- Collaborate with internal teams, OEM partners, and suppliers on system feasibility, design, and data exchange.
- Support manufacturing processes to bring components into production.
- Design and execute validation plans in collaboration with CAE and test teams.
- Support prototype development, vehicle builds, and issue resolution.
- Drive improvements in part quality, cost efficiency, and manufacturing processes.
- Communicate technical decisions, development plans, and issues to management.
Requirements
- Own the engineering specification, targets, architecture, design, development, schedule, and release of Autonomous Vehicle Hardware (AV HW) and integration components, including 3D CAD packages and drawings.
- Work closely with Industrial Design (ID) teams to generate creative ideas and conduct feasibility studies resulting in an aesthetic and functional design.
- Assist the efforts of AV HW engineering teams at OEM partners and collaborate with the PLM team on CAD and data exchange with OEM and supplier partners.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams as required to bring up production of components.
- Work closely with CAE and test teams to design and execute validation plans.
- Support the development and bring-up of bucks, mules, and prototypes, support vehicle builds, identify issues, and work to achieve the best solutions.
- Drive part quality improvements, cost reductions, and efficiency improvements.
- Communicate technical decisions, development plans, and ongoing issues to management.
- Role may require up to quarter-time travel domestically and internationally.
- Preferably have 3 years of experience in mechanical design, vehicle body systems, and an interest in vehicle mechanical packaging.
- Preferably have a strong background in functional areas such as Autonomous Sensors, Autonomous Control Hardware, EV Powertrain, Chassis, Structures, Exteriors, Interiors, High Voltage (HV) and Low Voltage (LV) electrical systems, and associated design criteria.
- Experience with studio design process and automotive industrial design is preferred.
- Ability to run static structural simulations and validations is a plus.
- Experience designing to GD&T standards and incorporating parameter and tolerance design concepts.
- Familiarity with the full product development process, from initial concept to production release.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as stamping, casting, and injection molding.
- Experience with composites is a plus.
- Experience designing for a wide range of materials with the ability to optimize for cost, weight, strength, durability, and thermals, using both FEA and hand calculations.
