Job Description
A safety leadership role focused on developing, implementing, and overseeing safety strategies for autonomous vehicle technologies, ensuring public safety, regulatory compliance, and fostering trust in Nuro's innovative robotics solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Safety Office and direct the efforts of the executive Safety Committee to develop safety vision and strategy.
- Prepare and review company-wide Safety Cases for products, ensuring consistency and quality.
- Implement Safety Management Systems (SMS) across the organization.
- Oversee safety strategy execution through managers and safety responsible engineers.
- Review and consult on Safety Case components, including verification and validation activities.
- Establish safety training and education requirements for safety responsible engineers and staff.
- Coordinate cross-functional safety activities related to product development, validation, and operation.
- Manage emergency planning and response procedures.
- Stay informed on emerging safety issues, regulations, and industry standards, providing guidance accordingly.
- Represent Nuro in safety discussions with regulators, industry bodies, and the media.
Requirements
- Deep technical expertise in safety engineering, preferably in a high-tech environment in transportation, with experience in frontier technology and AI ML development.
- Technical experience, preferably with hands-on experience working in software (SW), hardware (HW), and operations.
- Ability to lead and direct the efforts of the company's executive Safety Committee and the Office of Safety within the Public Trust organization.
- Experience in preparing company-wide Safety Cases for products, reviewing and improving safety documentation prepared by technical and operational functions.
- Experience serving as a Safety Management System (SMS) Executive, including articulating and implementing Safety Management Systems across the company.
- Ability to implement safety strategy through managers and safety responsible engineers in each functional area.
- Experience reviewing and consulting on Safety Case components, including verification and validation (V&V), prior to the preparation of the company-wide Safety Case.
- Ability to establish training and other requirements to improve safety education among safety responsible engineers and across the company.
- Experience playing a key role in cross-functional safety organizations and activities governing development, validation, and operation of products.
- Experience playing a key role in emergency planning and response.
- Ability to keep current on emerging issues in safety and autonomy, and review and provide guidance regarding regulatory and industry standards.
- Experience representing a company in national and international dialogue on autonomous vehicle engineering and safety, and articulating safety policies.
- Ability to represent the company in safety matters in dialogue with legislators, regulators, industry standard-setting bodies, and the media.
- Strong leadership skills and the capacity to work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively articulate safety vision and strategy to internal teams, regulators, industry bodies, and the public.
- Willingness to engage in hands-on work and practical problem-solving related to safety engineering.
- Educational background that supports technical expertise in safety engineering (specific degree requirements are not explicitly stated but implied).
