Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator (AVO) is responsible for operating self-driving vehicles in various traffic conditions, collecting data, troubleshooting operational issues, and ensuring safety protocols, while supporting the development and testing of autonomous driving technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under diverse traffic conditions while following safety protocols
- Collect data using proprietary software during real-world vehicle operations and provide feedback to engineering teams
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve problems and meet mileage targets
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning and tire inflation
- Interact with the public to educate them about autonomous vehicle technology and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for company leadership and stakeholders, ensuring safety and professionalism
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness and safety compliance
Requirements
- Possession of a current valid Texas driver s license and having been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years
- Ability to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 8:00am-4:30pm CT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), Afternoon/Evening 4:00pm-12:30am CT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), or Overnight 12:00am-8:30am CT (Wednesday to Sunday)
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test
- Ability to operate standard field equipment including laptops, tablets, and smartphones
- Ability to perform vehicle inspection checks before and after missions
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as washing vehicles and putting air in tires
- Ability to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours per day in an enclosed vehicle
- Physical ability to bend, squat, stretch, and lift up to 25 pounds regularly
- Physical ability to perform side and up/down movements of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary to operate a vehicle safely
- Physical ability to hold and grasp with hands and use foot pedals frequently when driving
- Experience operating a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions
- Experience troubleshooting operational issues in real time and collaborating with dispatch teams to resolve issues
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate effectively through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet
- Strong problem-solving skills, remaining calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues
- Strong collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision
- Self-driven, goal-oriented, and adaptable to frequent changes and evolving conditions
- Proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
- Demonstrated professionalism, care, and personal accountability, with adherence to safety protocols and standards of conduct
- Ability to occasionally interact with the public to educate them on autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors
- Ability to serve as a company ambassador by conducting high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, stakeholders, investors, and engineers while balancing safety and professional communication
Benefits & Perks
Compensation/salary range: $21/hour for Morning and Afternoon/Evening shifts, $22/hour for Overnight shift, with potential biannual bonuses based on performance
Work schedule: 5 days a week with various shift options including Morning, Afternoon/Evening, and Overnight shifts
