Job Description

The Principal Utility Electrical Engineer at New Leaf Energy leads the technical design and strategic initiatives for utility-scale renewable energy projects, collaborating with internal teams and external partners to develop innovative solutions and ensure project success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical discussions and develop engineering strategies for utility-scale projects
  • Evaluate utility deliverables and provide guidance to advance project development
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external industry professionals on strategic initiatives
  • Manage third-party engineering firms to meet project deadlines and standards
  • Create, maintain, and review technical standards, tools, and processes
  • Support project finance negotiations and post-closing activities
  • Mentor and onboard less experienced engineers
  • Perform power system calculations and analysis using engineering software
  • Act as subject matter expert and internal consultant for regional and strategic decision-making
  • Lead internal initiatives and develop standards using the NLE process implementation map

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or similar relevant study
  • 10 years of power engineering experience, with significant experience in development business
  • Professional engineer (PE) license or the ability to review and stamp other UEE work
  • Extensive experience performing power system calculations using software programs
  • Strong aptitude for creative problem-solving
  • Exhibit advanced understanding of power system and design engineering principles, including inverter design, system grounding, BESS design, and protection
  • Strong understanding of interconnection policy and regulatory environment in multiple regions
  • Ability to lead internal strategic initiatives with minimal direction
  • Ability to create new standards and processes using the NLE process implementation map
  • Ability to serve as the subject matter expert for the Regional Team and act as an internal consultant to assist with strategic decision-making
  • Ability to create and execute standard work that supports the Regional team and develops strategy for a particular region
  • Ability to seamlessly incorporate feedback and input from Policy and Finance team members into current bid set designs
  • Ability to support project finance during MIPA negotiations and post-closing, including 7C-MIPA and MIPA-Closeout
  • Ability to manage third-party engineering firms to deliver on NLE deadlines, including scoping, reviewing, and holding them accountable
  • Ability to create and maintain technical standards and tools
  • Ability to develop and mentor less experienced engineers
  • Ability to train and onboard new team members through organized team trainings or one-on-one meetings
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams (Development, Policy, Project Finance, Interconnection) and external industry professionals
  • Ability to understand and support regional interconnection policies and regulatory environments
  • Excellent organizational and self-starting skills, with a genuine drive for success
  • Mastery of the New Leaf VSM and development strategy, with the ability to educate and train others on these concepts
  • Ability to meet project deadlines, milestones, and urgencies
  • Ability to create and execute standard work supporting regional strategies
  • Willingness to work from a New Leaf office location or remotely, with consideration for the role's requirements

Market-competitive base salary ranging from $201,980 to $230,480 in Oakland
On-target annual cash bonus of 20% of base salary
